If you have stepped outside this week in the Dallas-Fort Worth area you already know, this summer is no joke.

But here’s what most homeowners don’t think about when the temperatures climb like this. While you’re staying cool inside, your roof is taking a beating that you can’t see from the ground. And after 52 years of roofing homes across North Texas, I’ve watched this play out the same way summer after summer.

Let me tell you exactly what’s happening up there right now and what you can do about it.

Your Attic Is Far Hotter Than You Think

When outside temperatures hit extreme levels in DFW, your attic temperature can reach 150°F to 160°F or more. That heat doesn’t just sit up there quietly. It pushes straight down through your ceiling all day long, makes your AC work twice as hard, drives up your energy bill, and slowly cooks your shingles from the inside out.

A roof that should last 25 to 30 years can fail in 15 when the attic ventilation isn’t working properly. I’ve seen it dozens of times. Good shingles, quality installation — gone too soon because the attic was a furnace that nobody addressed.

4 Ways Extreme Heat Damages Your Roof

  • Shingle blistering and cracking – When shingles are exposed to extreme UV and surface temperatures that can exceed 160°F on a dark roof, the oils that keep them flexible start to break down. You’ll see shingles that look bubbled, cracked, or that have lost their protective granules. Once that granule layer goes the shingle loses its UV protection and deteriorates rapidly.
  • Thermal expansion and contraction – Every day in a Texas summer your roof heats up dramatically and then cools down at night. That constant expansion and contraction puts stress on the flashing around your chimney, skylights, and pipe boots. Over time small gaps form. Those gaps are invisible until the first heavy rainstorm finds them and then you have a leak.
  • Attic heat shortening shingle life from underneath – This is the one nobody talks about. Most people think shingles age from the outside. They do, but in North Texas they age just as fast from the inside. When your attic hits 150°F that heat bakes the underside of your roof deck and the shingles above it. Proper attic ventilation — turbine vents, ridge vents, clear soffit vents — is the single most effective way to protect your roof from this kind of damage.
  • Sealant and adhesive failure – The sealant strips on your shingles and the adhesive around your flashing work within a temperature range. Extreme sustained heat can soften and degrade these sealants, which means your shingles start to lift at the edges and your flashing loses its waterproof seal. Storm season in North Texas often arrives right after the heat wave and that’s exactly when compromised sealant becomes a water damage problem.

What You Can Do Right Now

The good news is most of this is completely preventable and catchable early if someone gets up on your roof and takes a proper look.

Here’s what I check on every free inspection this time of year:

  • Ventilation — Are your turbine vents spinning? Are your soffit vents clear or covered by blown-in insulation? This is the fastest way to reduce attic heat and extend your roof’s life.
  • Shingle condition — Are there any areas where granules have shed into your gutters? Any visible cracking or curling on south-facing sections that get the most direct sun?
  • Flashing — Any separation around chimneys, pipe boots, or skylights? A loose seal in July becomes a leak in August when the storms roll through.
  • Ridge cap — The peak of your roof takes the most heat and UV. Cracking ridge cap shingles are one of the earliest signs of heat damage.

The Timing Matters

Right now is actually the best time to catch heat damage before fall storm season arrives. DFW storm season doesn’t care that your roof just survived a heat wave. In fact, storms are most damaging to roofs that heat has already weakened.

If your roof is more than 10 years old, hasn’t been inspected in the last couple of years, or if you’ve noticed your upstairs feeling hotter than usual this summer — that’s your sign.
